Two hours later I felt as though I were listening to escapees from a Scientology-type cult. In the lead-up to the Oprah interview, the palace implemented an exceedingly gauche counterstrategy, launching an inquiry into whether Meghan bullied her staff, that was enthusiastically championed by the press. I wonder if any of them believe that Prince Philip and his children have never berated their staff, driven them to tears or even to quit. Perhaps the palace’s efforts would have been better focused on investigating the truly explosive claims about the queen’s beloved son Prince Andrew, who might politely be described as feckless and has reportedly so far declined to cooperate with the U.S. Department of Justice in its ongoing investigations around the nefarious goings-on of the late Jeffrey Epstein.
But when the Duchess of Sussex deftly elided an unnamed family member’s queries about her child’s skin color with the stripping of a princely title and ergo security protection—hence the couple’s need to flee—I darn near lost it. Incendiary. (Oprah later offered the disclaimer that it was neither the queen nor her gaffe-prone husband, the ailing Prince Philip, who raised the issue of skin color.)
